White
squirrels are one of the areas unique gifts of nature. You
can find them scampering around throughout Brevard. They have
been known to be quite friendly. Many visitors to Brevard
are in disbelief about them. They think that they are albino
squirrels. You can rest assured that they are real, authentic
and a breed of their own.
White squirrels first came to Brevard in 1949. They originally
came from some of the remote Hawaiian Islands. You can thank
H. H. Mull for their presence in Brevard. The way they got
to Brevard is quite interesting.
A carnival man had them as an attraction. In 1940 while
traveling through North Florida, his caravan wagon turned
over and two of the white squirrels escaped. They headed
for the pecan groves where they thrived and multiplied.
In 1945 M. M. Black, a friend and fellow railroad man, gave
two of the squirrels he caught in his pecan grove to H.
H. Mull. Mr. Mull brought them back to Brevard and gave
them to his niece Barbara Ann Mull in 1949. She tired of
the squirrels and gave them to her grandfather W. P. Mull.
One of the squirrels escaped while he was feeding them so
he turned the other one loose. Soon there were white squirrels
all over Brevard.
While the squirrels were caged in captivity they wouldn’t
mate. Now they romp and play for the joy and entertainment
of the residents and visitors. |
